About Us

American Movies Matter is an independent public-education initiative of American Capitol Media highlighting the cultural, economic, and social importance of American filmmaking. It is not affiliated with any celebrity, studio, media company, or other industry participant, and it does not advocate for or against any particular transaction, litigation, regulatory proceeding, or governmental action. This is not a celebrity campaign, a studio advertisement, or a collection of scripted endorsements. It is a civic and cultural record. Its value comes from ordinary people speaking in their own words about the role movies have played in their lives, communities, aspirations, memories, and understanding of America.

Our Mission

The mission of American Movies Matter is to renew public appreciation for American film as a source of storytelling, employment, imagination, shared memory, national identity, cultural exchange, and influence.

Movies are commonly discussed through the language of box office performance, celebrity, awards ceremonies, technology, and corporate economics. Those subjects matter. But they do not exhaust the public meaning of film.  Movies shape childhood memories, introduce us to unfamiliar lives, preserve history, enlarge empathy, create common reference points, and carry American stories and ideas across the world.

American Movies Matter seeks to bring that broader meaning back into public view. It does not tell audiences what to think or ask them to make a case for the industry. It begins with a simpler question:  Why do movies matter to you?

The answers, drawn from people speaking from their own lives and experiences, tell a compelling story.
